A formal request for proposals from a group of pre-qualified LNG suppliers was issued on Friday as AGL took a decisive step to follow through on its plan to start importing gas just as Australia is set to become the world's largest exporter of the main liquefied form of the fuel.

But AGL says that demand for the gas is clear based on discussions it has held with gas consumers, including large manufacturing companies in Victoria and NSW, many of which are struggling to source gas at prices they can afford after a surge in prices this year. Australia looks set to start importing LNG as well as exporting.

Some commentators and east coast gas producers have argued that a import terminal doesn't make sense given the country's abundant gas resources. But state restrictions on accessing onshore gas, a limited choice of gas suppliers, and the cost of pipeline infrastructure and transportation tariffs count in favour of the controversial import proposal.

AGL's move is confirmation that it believes the need for the import terminal is unaffected by ongoing efforts by the federal government to ease the squeeze on east coast gas, including last month's deal with big gas producers to divert gas into the domestic market in and The import terminal would start up in orwhen supply in the now export-dominated east coast market is expected still to be tight.

Others say it makes much more sense than building a large new pipelinecosting several billion dollars, to take gas from north-west Australia to the eastern states.

The Crib Point project involves upgrading an existing jetty and building an underground pipeline to Pakenham where gas will enter the grid to supply South Australia and NSW as well as Victoria. Extensive community engagement has already taken place and is continuing, while detailed environmental studies are also underway for a development application that has yet to be lodged.

These trucks will be bombs on wheels, maybe hundreds a day going to the site, traveling miles and miles in all kinds of weather, through our neighborhoods and along our highways.
