Read more. Tuesday 1 SeptemberPM. View all issues.Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust and Ngati Porou Hauora are bringing research to Wairoa and Tairawhiti which could help reduce the incidence of cervical cancer rates for women in New Zealand. Internationally-regarded expert in women's health, Professor Beverley Lawton from Te Tatai Hauora O Hine, Victoria University, said Wairoa was receptive to designing research that people needed and wanted. That is why we are here, because the community is very interested.

New research with Ngati Pahauwera and Ngati Porou Hauora partners will examine different care pathways focusing on cervical screening, and will likely start early autumn next year. The research, funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand, will test a different screening pathway for cervical cancer in both regions. Testing for HPV that can cause cervical cancer is a better way of detecting pre-cancer and preventing cancer, than cervical smears.

Out of women, 10 are likely to have a positive test for the virus, but only a few of those will have abnormalities of the cervix, and the abnormalities can be treated before cancer develops. A health care pathway which enables women to self-test with a swab and receive the results within an hour, is part of the research being undertaken in Wairoa and with Ngati Porou Hauora.

It also supports the women to book a follow-up appointment straight away if necessary. The team also want to know how acceptable the experience is for women.

Ngāti Porou Hauora - Mental Health & Addictions

Do the women and the clinicians think it would work? Research in Te Tai Tokerau looked at whether the self-test was acceptable to women. Prof Lawton said those in the trial found it highly acceptable. Do women prefer it? Do clinicians prefer it for women? Do women get quicker follow-up if they need it and is it sustainable?

For nationwide consideration, Prof Lawton and others have lobbied all the political parties over the issue that government has not moved swiftly enough to introducing HPV testing. Because cervical cancer is preventable, the World Health Organisation is pushing for its global elimination. Other countries have already moved to HPV testing as the primary method of screening, because of its high level of accuracy.

If the result is negative you do not need another test for five years. It could be 18 months to two years away for this cervical screening using a swab rather than a speculum.

Since the New Zealand national programme has gone to Cabinet for funding without success. An urgent priority of the research centre will be type-2 diabetes, given the high levels of this disease throughout the region. Initial studies will focus on understanding how genetics affect the development of diseases such as type-2 diabetes and related conditions like gout, particularly in Maori, and how genetic variations affect how our bodies process sugar.

The research will pave the way for precision medicine, where medical treatment is tailored to the individual.

Cremonesi

One of the first research projects will be a study with high school students, their teachers and families to explore why some children absorb sugar well from their gut and others do not, and to understand the effect this has on body weight and health. Another will focus on understanding the impact that newly-identified gene variants can have on the risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Clinical trialsA third arm of the research will focus on developing clinical trials to understand the benefits of new types of drugs used widely to treat type-2 diabetes overseas but not available in New Zealand.

Teepa Wawatai, chairman of Ngati Porou Hauora Charitable Trust Board, said diabetes, gout, heart and kidney disease were four important health issues affecting Ngati Porou.

We believe this will result in better ways to prevent and treat these conditions while delivering jobs and educational outcomes.

This mechanism allows us to deliver these outcomes in a way that does not divert resources from our critical frontline healthcare roles. Professor Peter Shepherd from the Maurice Wilkins Centre said such research was usually confined to universities in large cities.

Over the last years the people working within the hospital and clinics have looked after the health and well being of East Coast communities who often live 2 hours drive from town.

During this time, the community has weathered devastating impacts of colonisation, World Wars, natural disasters and loss of vital infrastructure. These factors combined, have resulted in low incomes, few employment choices and the region suffering the highest level of premature mortality in New Zealand. A lack of population growth and government support threatened the viability of Ngati Porou Hauora -the only owned and run Maori hospital in the world. Despite the erosion of the community, winning ownership of the Hauora allowed a dedicated and resilient team to create unique and innovative models of community care.

With smart management approaches and consistent support from our parent entity, Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou, our team have secured the short-term future. Today, Ngati Porou Hauora is still the sole primary health care provider for a challenging geographic area that stretches across km of coastline.

The overall experience in Lapland was amazing and very well organized, you always feel taking care of without been pushing, so you feel also free to do your things. I highly recommend travelling with Nordic Visitor. Nordic Visitor made everything SO EASY. All I had to worry about was showing up on time.

Everything was taken care of, and it really gave me peace of mind and allowed me to enjoy my vacation. We enjoyed both the quality and variety of accommodations in our program.

We were particularly happy that we chose guesthouses rather than hotels because it gave us more extended contact with locals on a personal basis. All the hotels were fantastic. The suggested tours were all appropriate. The timing and deadlines were clearly communicated and the directions easy to follow. Sirry did a wonderful job of working in some extra days for us at the beginning and the end of our trip.

Found on Google and selected option from website. We did a 10 day tour with 2 days extra in Reykjavik - hire car package and all accommodation Went like clockwork only better. We managed to see most of the recommended high spots from the wonderful itinerary which was prepared for us - plus a few other extras.

We managed seven hot bathing experiences and only had to pay for two of them. The Hotels were excellent - very friendly people too, and we managed to see the northern lights at one of them at 1. The overall organisation of train and boat travel was excellent.

All bookings for hotels were accurate and instructions to find the hotels were easily followed.Much in advance of the trip, we received in the mail all of our hotel and transportation vouchers, a detailed itinerary, a map with a suggested driving route and all of our hotels plotted on it, along with suggestions about where to eat and what to do and see along the way.

Alexandra was efficient, helpful, responsive and always cheerful. Once in Iceland, we received an Iceland Road Atlas and a phone to use in emergencies. Nothing went wrong on this trip. If it had, I know that Nordic Visitor would have helped us in any way that they could. My expectations are high and they were surpassed. We just returned from an awesome nine day trip with visits to Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo. Cecilia from Nordic Visitor coordinated the trip including transporation between the cities and hotels.

She even coordinated a last minute change during our trip. Overall, we had a great trip and are very happy with our expereince with Cecilia and Nordic Visitor. This review comes a little late but then better late than never. Last year we booked the four corners tour of Iceland with nordic visitor.

Our trip from day one was very well planned and organised. Iceland is a beautiful country no doubt but with the services of Nordic visitor it became an unforgetable experience. Here i want to specially thank HELMUR for the promptness in resolving any issues and taking care of all our needs as we were travelling with small children aged 4 and 11. Must acknowledge and thanks HJULTI who went out of his way to show the best face of Nordic Visitor team.

Wish them all the best. I was very pleased with the whole experience. My thanks to Kolbrun who was always quick to reply to my emails and questions.

She was very helpful throughout. I liked the hotels selected and the locations they were in. Overall the holiday was a great success and I am sure at some stage we will book another holiday through yourselves. The map provided to us highlighting the route and where the hotels were located, as well as attractions, was extremely helpful.

The itinerary was well planned and we never felt rushed. We really enjoyed your wonderful country. We asked Alexandra to try to get us the best rooms possible that were also quiet, if possible. It was obvious that she had done so at every destination. She asked us what we wanted, listened, asked a few good questions and then did her best to find us what we asked for and we were very pleased with the results.

The materials provided by Nordic Visitor were fantastic.
